If I had to pick one celebrity as my beauty muse, it would probably be Hailey Bieber. Her glowing skin and natural, dewy makeup looks (courtesy of her brand, Rhode) are big factors in this—but the star also has impeccable taste in fragrances—especially when it comes to luxury French scents. In an interview with Harper’s Bazaar UK back in 2023, Bieber revealed that one of her favourite perfumes is Fleur Narcotique by Ex Nihilo.

Founded in 2013 by Sylvie Loday, Olivier Royère and Benoît Verdier, Ex Nihilo is a niche fragrance house that breaks conventions and creates head-turning, experimental scents for those of you wanting to stand out from the crowd. Sitting in the luxury market, each perfume ranges from around £180 to £365. Because of the higher price tag, I was very keen to try the fragrances out for myself. Of course, I was intrigued to know what Bieber’s go-to scent smelt like, but I also wanted to see whether the other bestsellers from the brand were worth the luxury price tag.

I’ve been testing Ex Nihilo perfumes, from old favourites to new launches.
Alongside Fleur Narcotique, I’ve been testing some of the brand’s newest and most popular scents, and below, I’ve rounded up my top Ex Nihilo picks, alongside my honest thoughts on each fragrance. If you want to smell like your most expensive self, I highly suggest you keep scrolling…

1. Ex Nihilo Fleur Narcotique
best overall
Key notes: Bergamot, lychee, peach, jasmine, peony, orange blossom, moss, musk
Ok, I can see why Hailey loves this perfume. All I have to say is wow. If you don’t like floral scents, this isn’t for you, but if you want to smell like the most lavish bouquet you’ve ever seen, this is the fragrance for you. It’s a fruity, floral, heady delight that instantly cocoons you in this sweet, sophisticated cloud of jasmine, peony and peach. If I were reading the notes alone, I’d say it sounds like a lovely, everyday option, but it actually has so much depth that I’ll be saving it for the most special of date nights. This truly is a work of art.
2. Ex Nihilo Lust In Paradise Extrait
best summer scent
Key notes: Rosyfolia, blackcurrant, ginger, pink pepper, jasmine sambac, petalia, rose, musk, akigalawood, cedarwood
A newer launch from the brand, I first smelt this fragrance on a friend of mine and immediately asked her what perfume she was wearing. So, you can imagine my delight when I was lucky enough to receive a sample at work. Designed to evoke the feeling of sunshine on the skin, it has a captivating, warm aroma that feels perfectly fitting for this time of year. Whilst the opening is fresh and floral, it soon reveals a juicy blackcurrant note, before settling into a warming heart of ginger and pink pepper. Another scent I can see in my collection for years to come.
3. Ex Nihilo Honore Delights
best sweet scent
Key notes: Bergamot, neroli, orange blossom, iris, ambrette, sandalwood, cedarwood, musk
If you like sweeter scents, but still want that sophisticated edge, then you need to know about Honore Delights. Inspired by the delicacies of a French patisserie, it has a warm, delicate, soft sweetness which is grounded by notes of cedarwood and musk. Trust me, it’s a total compliment magnet. I mean, there’s a reason we named it one of the best spring perfumes of all time.
4. Ex Nihilo Demon Dancer
best fresh scent
Key notes: Rhubarb, bergamot, peppermint, blood orange, orange blossom, blackcurrant, akigalawood, ambrofix, musk, tonka bean
The newest launch from the brand, and a perfume that our beauty director, Shannon Lawlor, can’t stop raving about. Seriously, when I asked her about it, she said: “It’s the best thing I’ve ever smelled,” before describing how she spritzed it in the office and everyone on the team suddenly gravitated towards her, desperate to know what fragrance she was wearing. It’s this kind of impact that makes Ex Nihilo so unique. This scent, in particular, feels incredibly freeing, with vibrant notes of rhubarb, bergamot, peppermint and blood orange. It will awaken the senses in the best way possible, and once it does so, you’ll find it hard to forget.
5. Ex Nihilo Iris Porcelana
best floral scent
Key notes: Violet leaf accord, iris, rose, sandalwood, musks, cedarwood
You’ll often find notes of iris in elegant perfumes that conjure up images of Parisian powder rooms. However, in true Ex Nihilo style, this feels like a modern interpretation, with a fresh violet opening and a base of musk and cedarwood. Yes, it’s floral at the very heart, but what surrounds it is a crisp, soft, delicate aroma that makes me feel as if I’m wrapped in cashmere.
6. Ex Nihilo Fleur Narcotique Extrait
best intense scent
Key notes: Bergamot, lychee, osmanthus, jasmine, freesia, peony, orange blossom, sandalwood, moss, musk
I know I’ve already spoken about this scent, but I love it so much that I had to include this version, too. An intense interpretation of the original fragrance; each note is heightened to create a more powerful wearing experience. It’s the kind of perfume you reach for when you want your scent to linger long after you’re gone.
